Divorce and Conscious Uncoupling

Happy Family DivorceIt isn’t often that we look at the lives of Hollywood’s elite and take away from it some good advice. The latest post made by Gwyneth Paltrow on her website, goop.com, regarding her and Chris Martin’s recent “Conscious Uncoupling”, is one from which many divorcing parents could take a lesson.

On March 25th Gwyneth announced that she and Chris Martin will be separating and asked for privacy for herself and her family. The most important statement made by Gwyneth was in regards to her children.

“We are, however, and always will be a family, and in many ways, we are closer than we have ever been. We are parents first and foremost, to two incredibly wonderful children-“. She specifically asks that for the protection of their precious children that their privacy be protected.

It is all too easy to get caught up in the “he said, she said” and the “he did this, she did that” of divorce. Some tend to forget that, though you may be “consciously uncoupling” from your spouse, you are still a team when it concerns your children. This is the most important thing to remember if you are going through a separation. You are your child’s primary role model and that does not change simply because the marriage relationship is at an end.

Divorce is a difficult process and it is safe to say that not many people enjoy the process. Many feelings erupt and can be extremely difficult to control. But, if we can remember that the goal is to provide the best for the children and can perceive the end result as a chance to grow and learn as a person, then maybe divorce will not have to be recognized as such a negative thing.
